Shirley Song

Shirley Song is a food scientist and nutrition educator with over 10 years of experience in the food industry. She has worked in product development, quality assurance, and research for major companies, including Dole Food Company, Columbus Craft Meats, and Hormel Foods, where she specialized in food formulation, safety, and innovation. Currently, Shirley is pursuing her Master of Science in Nutrition Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, on the path to becoming a Registered Dietitian.

As a Korean American and child of immigrants, Shirley is passionate about bringing diversity and cultural sensitivity into the nutrition field. She believes that food is deeply personal and that honoring cultural traditions is key to making nutrition education inclusive and impactful. With a strong focus on diabetes management and gut health, she combines her expertise in food science with evidence-based nutrition research with cultural practices to create meaningful, personalized nutrition solutions. 

Beyond her work in nutrition, Shirley has a deep love for cooking and enjoys experimenting with flavors that reflect her heritage and global culinary influences. She believes that cooking is not just about sustenance but a powerful way to connect with others, celebrate culture, and foster a healthier relationship with food.

Through her work with the Non-UPF Program, Shirley advocates for transparency in food production and the promotion of whole, minimally processed foods. She is dedicated to bridging the gap between food science and public health, ensuring that everyone—regardless of background—has access to the knowledge and resources needed to eat well and live well.
